Van Eyck. An optical revolution – 01/02/2020 – 30/04/2020

We kicked of the festivities this year at the Museum of Fine Arts (or MSK if you please) with the exhibition “Van Eyck. An optical revolution”. We had the pleasure of visiting the exposition with the Ghent Hotel Association and it’s absolutely a must see for both tourists and locals alike. Did you know that only twenty works were preserved in modern times worldwide? Half of them will come on a little citytrip to Ghent for the audience to enjoy. The exhibition also offers an interesting understanding of the importance of the Low Countries in the Late Middle Ages as a creative breeding ground for artists and craftsmen. If you would like to visit, we suggest you buy your tickets online, not only are they cheaper, but you can immediately check the available timeslots.

Lights On Van Eyck – 28/03/2020 – 01/11/2020

If you are into multimedia art, music and light projections, “Lights On Van Eyck” at the St Nicholas’ Church at the Korenmarkt will be something for you! During half an hour a digital and musical reinterpretation of the Ghent Alterpiece will take you on a magical journey!

Kleureyck: Van Eyck’s Colours in Design – 13/03/2020 – 06/09/2020

The Ghent alterpiece is famous for it’s unique and intense colours, which were restored in it’s full glory during the latest renovation. What is the origin of colour? How do you create colour? What is the impact of colour? “Kleureyck: Van Eyck’s Colours in Design” at the Design Museum Ghent gladly answers all these questions. When you stroll through the 8 colour groups of Van Eyck during the pigment walk you will get a better understanding about all these aspects. Over 100 design pieces demonstrate how light, matter and patterns have their effect on colour.

OMG! Seven Senses Tour – 30/04/2020 – 31/10/2020

The “Seven Senses Tour” isn’t like any other citywalking tour! You will discover the city through the eyes of Jan Van Eyck using all your senses to the fullest. The enthousiastic city guides will introduce you to many amazing historical gems like the Kruideniershuis, Vrijseschippershuis and the Castle of Gerard the Devil. After that you will get the chance to navigate through Ghent’s waterways and experience a display of digital projections in the tunnel under François Laurentplein square. During the Seven Senses Tour, you will also come across some wonderful pieces of street art. And on top of all of that the host will take you to several local artisans to try some yummy delicacies. So rest assured, your taste buds will be jumping for joy too!

Let’s talk about the Ghent Alterpiece! – Opening 08/10/2020

And last… but definitely not least! We are super excited that The St Bavo’s Cathedral, the home of the Ghent Alterpiece, is getting a new visitor’s center. Here you will be able to admire all the restored panels and other wonderful pieces of art. With the help of augmented reality you will be transported back in time to the workshop of Van Eyck and experience the turbulent history of the Alterpiece and the cathedral as if you were there yourself!

Straatkunst is behoorlijk prominent aanwezig in Gent. De stad voert al jaren een actief beleid inzake graffiti en straatkunst. In concreto ondersteunt Gent individuele graffitikunstenaars, geeft ze advies en stelt ze projecten op zoals het “Sorry, not sorry” straatkunstfestival. Dit immens populaire festival bood kunstenaars de mogelijkheid om de stad te gebruiken als tentoonstellingsruimte en streefde ernaar een breed publiek te bereiken. Het festival zorgde ervoor dat stad Gent een aantal kleurrijke plaatjes rijker is geworden.

De  “Sorry, not sorry” route biedt een overzicht van alle muurschilderingen die in Gent te bewonderen zijn. Het is een wandelroute die absoluut de moeite waard is. Trek dus je comfortabele schoenen aan, ga wandelen en ontdek Gent als een expositieruimte. Haal de gratis straatkunstkaart bij de dienst toerisme of download de kaart hier.

This picture of cannon DULLE GRIET dates from 1900. The cannon was brought to Ghent by the Calvinist city council from Oudenaarde and served to keep the Spaniards away. The Dulle Griet fired heavy stones. It is said that it was never used in Ghent.

400 years ago – since 1618 – people from the countryside sold butter, eggs and cheese for the town hall. On this photo of the BUTTER
MARKET from around 1900, you can still see a façade row that closes the current Belfortstreet in the direction of Sint-Jacobs.
That street did not exist in Ghent in the old days.

Deze foto van kanon de Dulle Griet dateert van 1900. Het kanon werd door het Calvinistisch stadsbestuur van Oudenaarde naar Gent gebracht en diende om de Spanjaarden weg te houden. 400 jaar geleden – sinds 1618 – verkochten “mensen van den buiten” boter, eieren en kaas voor het stadhuis. Op deze foto van rond 1900, zie je nog een gevelrij die de huidige Belfortstraat in de richting van Sint-Jacobs afsluit. Die straat bestond toen niet.

De groentenmarkt is sinds de middeleeuwen een marktplek geweest: verkoop van groenten & vis, vlees in het overdekte Groot Vleeshuis, pensen op de pensmarkt. Ook vandaag is er nog iedere vrijdag een mini-bio-groentenmarkt voor de centrumbewoners. Op de foto zie je de markt in 1930. Toen deze foto van het Gravensteen genomen werd, in 1870, waren de flanken van de burcht aangebouwd met huizen. De ‘zonevreemde’ bebouwing liet nog net de toegangspoort vrij. 1. VIRGIN ATLANTIC – GLASS BOTTOMED AIRPLANES 

One of the more famous April Fools’ pranks of recent years would be the glass-bottomed planes from Virgin Atlantic. They made headlines with the “world’s first glass-bottomed plane”. Images of the new aircraft were broadcast far and wide, with promises of a glass-topped aircraft to follow, so passengers could see the stars at night. The prank was of course a success; it was such an appealing concept! And of course if anyone was going to launch a glass-bottomed plane, it would be Richard Branson who was quoted saying “I’m thrilled to announce that Virgin has created another world-first”.

2. WESTJET – CHILD-FREE CABINES
WestJet’s 2012 April 1^st offering was called Kargo Kids, an initiative to help people have much more peaceful flights. The idea is that kids are placed into a toboggan and whisked off into a child-friendly cabin inside the cargo hold, allowing adults to travel in peace and quiet. Inside the cabin would be child counsellors, a healthy selection of toys, and even “a state of the art feed trough”, making sure the kids are kept safe and sound. Who said anything about wishful thinking?

3. EMIRATES – SWIMMING POOL AIRPLANE
Emirates claimed to be launching a triple-decker aircraft with its own swimming pool, games room and more. Many were disappointed to hear this design was just one of many April Fools’ pranks.

4. LOUD TOURISTS TO BE REJECTED IN PARIS

This one really had us going: a purported group called Manger en Paix (Eat in Peace) called for bistros and cafes in Paris to post signs and implement systems to deter tourists from eating noisily. Read more: thelocal.fr

5. VIBE AGENT – THE HOTELICOPTER 

The “Hotelicopter” was announced on various news sites as the world’s first flying hotel back in 2009. The four-storey helicopter had 18 luxurious rooms, with queen-sized beds, mini-bars and Wi-Fi, and even promised room service! Sadly, only two prototypes of the Mil V-12 were ever produced – one crashed and the other is in a museum. The hoax was for the former travel site Vibe Agent, which rebranded itself Hotelicopter after the prank took off.

Not only did we celebrate Valentine on the 14th. This Sunday the 17th of February is Random Acts Of Kindness Day. We hope the next 8 tips inspire you to conjure up a smile on everybody’s face while you travel.

FOCUS ON LOCUS BUSINESS

Take the time to research locally-owned accommodations, businesses, tour operators,
and activities. One of the best ways to contribute positively to the places you visit is to ensure
that the money you bring in stays and benefits the community directly.

SAY HI. SAY THANK YOU. SAY BYE.

Or just smile to people or give them a little nod.

MIND YOUR MANNERS

Show your respect for locals by taking initiative and interest in the local culture, traditions,
norms & values, resources and language. Learn a few phrases in the local language. Ask
permission to take pictures. Share the pictures with the locals. What a cool interaction is that, no?!
Respect the house you are staying in. Keep it clean and tidy. Ask questions about traditions
and habits. And try a few of them out. In short: a great way to give back while traveling is by keeping
an open mind and letting yourself be guided to discover big and small differences between you and
your travel destination.

LEAVE A LITTLE DONATION WHEN YOU SEE A COLLECTION BOX

Or donate all your foreign small change.

SPREAD THE WORD

Were you happy with the accommodation you stayed at? Was the waiter amazing at that
restaurant? Was that the cutest bakery you ever saw? Did that person try but failed anyway?
Share your experiences. Not only with friends and family back home but use the social media
platforms. Post pictures with tags on instagram. Write a positive review on facebook, tripadvisor,
google business. They have such a big impact. Share your stories on your blog. Try to become an
active promotor of the locals, the city, the country that you just visited. This is really a powerful
way to give back while traveling.

DARE TO ENGAGE

What about taking it a step further? A really daring way to give back while traveling is to
talk & interview local people and introduce them to your social networks. Interesting
thought right? Or give constructive feedback, specific tips or creative ideas about your
stay/your guide/your travel experience that can help the local owner or community to grow
and advance.

SHARE YOUR TICKET

When you are on your way to your next travel destination and you still have a valid parking
ticket for an hour or a valid day-bus-ticket,  give it to somebody that can use it.

“No act of kindness – no matter how small – is ever wasted.

5. ENJOY SOME QUALITY TIME AND PLAY A GAME OR READ A BOOK TOGETHER

Ghent has a couple of bars where you can play board games or read a good book. One of our favorites is Hotsy Totsy. This old brown pub has a glorious past and beautiful interior. It is known for its poetry performances, conferences, stand-up comedy, cabaret and jazz concerts. Or visit Le Bal Infernal. This cosy little bar has some great tapas and a giant wall filled with used books that you can read. This has V-day romance all written over it.

6. GO TO THE OPERA

Another great one on our list of unexpected Valentine’s Day Ideas is…the opera. No one goes to the opera anymore, let’s bring it back! It can be so impressive and moving. Visiting the Opera house is an experience on it’s own.  And let’s be honest: romance is at the heart of every great opera story. Well, romantic failures are usually what drives opera. So while you celebrate the love of your life or singlehood, let’s learn from opera’s chaotic affairs so you can avoid their mistakes in your own love life.

7. LOVE GOES THROUGH THE STOMACH

Ghentians love to indulge. There are over 734 restaurants in the city. So act like a local: get dressed up and go out for a lovely dinner but give it a twist. You can be cheesy and have dinner at restaurant Valentijn or be fancy and make a reservation (way upfront!) in one of the 5 Michelin star restaurants Ghent has. In the entire city center you will find plenty of cozy restaurants with lovely menus that you are looking for. Fancy sushi, Japanese or Chinese? Or do you prefer Italian cuisine? Just explore the city or browse the resto-website and discover a restaurant to your liking.

8. HAVE A STAYCATION AT A DESIGN HOTEL…LIKE THE HIDE

And yes, without blushing we want to nominate ourselves as one of the great unexpected Valentine’s Day ideas. 😉 When you are looking for your own little urban hideaway, The Hide is it. What’s more fun then spoiling yourself with a delicious little slice of uncomplicated luxury and having a cozy couple of nights in one of our designer city flats. The Hide is a fresh relief compared to hotels and there is nothing more romantic than star-gazing on the penthouse terrace or binge-watching netflix on the couch.

5. SPEEL EEN SPEL OF LEES EEN BOEK OP CAFE

Gent heeft een aantal cafées waar je gezelschapspelletjes kan spelen of een goed boek kunt lezen. een van onze favorieten is Hotsy Totsy. Deze oude bruine pub heeft een glorieus verleden en een prachtig interieur. Het staat bekend om zijn poëzie-avonden, stand up comedy nights, cabaret en jazz optredens. Je kan ook een bezoekje brengen aan Le Bal Infernal. Deze gezellige bar heeft een aantal geweldige tapas en een gigantische boekenwand waar je een tweedehands boek kan uitlenen en lezen.

6. GA NAAR DE OPERA

Niemand gaat nog naar de opera, niettegenstaande het zo indrukwekkend en ontroerend kan zijn. Een bezoek aan het  Opera huis  is al een ervaring op zich. En laten we eerlijk zijn: romantiek vormt de kern van elk groot operaverhaal. Of beter gezegd: romantische drama’s zijn meestal wat opera drijft. Dus terwijl je de liefde van je leven of je single zijn viert, geniet en leer van de chaotische verhaallijnen in de opera.

7. DE LIEFDE GAAT DOOR DE MAAG

Gentenaars zijn échte Vlaamse bourgondiërs. Er zijn meer dan 734 restaurants in de stad. Dus gedraag je als een local: tut je op en ga lekker uit eten maar geef je avondje uit een twist. Je kan lekker over-the-top klef zijn en gaan dineren in restaurant Valentijn of je doet over-the-top chic en reserveert (voldoende op voorhand!) in één van de 5 sterrenrestaurants die Gent rijk is.
