The Hide @ Nederkouter

Gepost door The Hide op 11-03-2019

The Nederkouter is where The Hide is located. The etymology of this streetname goes all the way back to the old medieval Dutch words “den neder cauter”. Which means “under the cauter“.

The “Cauter/Kouter” is a big square above the Nederkouter street. The name “Cauter” is derived from the Latin “cultura” meaning cultivated land. It refers to the field complexes from the Gallo-Roman period and the early Middle Ages. In the later medieval period the “Cauter” became a public place for military parades, horse fairs and archery competitions. In the 19th century the wealthy bourgeoisie choose this square for their traditional Sunday stroll accompanied by a fine music from the bandstand. Which anno 2019 the Ghentians still do.

So go do like in the middle ages and visit the flowermarket at the Kouter on Saturday and Sunday morning, have a glass of champagne at the “Blauwe Kiosk” or a hot yummie coffee at one of the food trucks.

Enjoy!

Geniete ervan!
